HMRC 'need to stop simplifying tax credits message'
Companies are being misled by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) over tax credits, it has been suggested. The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) has accused the institution of simplifying their latest message in such a way that it could easily mislead a casual reader.
Quoting precise figures for those who can claim working tax credit could see people not apply for it because they believe they do not qualify, the LITRG remarked.
The information also implies that people over 50 who are returning to work after a period of taking benefits can claim, when in fact it is people who are 49 and over.
It is hoped by the group that HMRC will listen to their complaints and stop introducing posters to the workplace that, in its opinion, only confuse staff.
The LITRG recently reminded small employers that the time for returning the necessary data is approaching and they had to ensure they started promptly or face fines for being late.
