Preparation and Staging Dates

The auto-enrolment legislation is being phased in and applies from a date set by the DWP for each employer (known as the ‘Staging Date’). For smaller employers, this could be anytime up to April 2017.

The Pensions Regulator should issue a letter to employers advising them of their staging date at least 12 months in advance.

You should check whether you have received such a letter and if so, start your preparation.

If no letter has been received from the Regulator, we suggest that you check your staging date immediately. This can be done online by entering your PAYE scheme reference on the Pensions Regulator's website

A word of warning about any employees with fixed or enhanced protection

When the legislation applies to your business, all eligible employees must be automatically enrolled even if they have Enhanced or Fixed Protection for tax purposes.

If your employees have Fixed or Enhanced Protection, this will be lost if they build up further pension benefits. This could have a major impact on the tax treatment of their existing pension rights and could result in them paying significantly more tax when they draw their benefits.
